 CLASSICAL GUITARIST PERFORMED AT MIDDLE GEORGIA COLLEGE
(Cochran, GA) - Classical guitarist Ben Altman recently performed “Works for Classical Guitar” at the Russell Hall Theatre at Middle Georgia College for students, faculty, and community members. The performance featured Bach’s Partita in B minor and Joan Tower’s Clocks. After a brief intermission, Altman finished the show with Tarrega’s Capricho Arabe, selections from Albeniz’s Suite Espanola, and closed with Tansman’s Cavatina. Altman’s performance offers something different to each student. “Music majors get a chance to hear music performed, which is something they are striving to do,” said Dr. Robert McTyre, an associate professor of music and theatre at MGC. Non-music majors will realize there are other ways of presenting and experiencing music,” said Dr. McTyre. “Students are used to listening to music as background or entertainment for entertainment’s sake. This music is designed for people to pay attention; it’s a different listening experience.” As a non- music major, Anthony Davis, a freshman general studies major, had never seen classical guitar played before. “I had never heard of the genre before,” he said. “It was pretty nice. You could tell he was in touch with playing the guitar, and was feeling the music.” Altman has performed across the country, from the Rocky Ridge Music Center in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains to his native Georgia’s Macon Symphony Orchestra. He is on faculty at the Rocky Ridge Music Center summer festival in Estes Park, Colorado. He also teaches guitar at his private studio in Denver. |
