 KIP BRADLEY'S EXHIBIT "NEW PAINTINGS" OPENS AT MGC (Cochran, GA) - Kip Bradley's exhibit "New Paintings" recently opened at Middle Georgia College’s Peacock Gallery in Russell Hall. To honor the opening, Bradley gave a Gallery Talk to students, faculty, and community members February 28. "New Paintings" is a collection of oil enamel of painted geometric shapes on bent, folded, and rolled aluminum. Bradley's works play with depth and perception in a shallow space by playing with materials, said Charlie Agnew, an associate professor of art at MGC and the Gallery Director of Peacock Gallery. "The paint has a physical presence and jumps off the material," he said. Bradley's works contain a visual contradiction between the surface and the flatness of its images with the illusion of depth and space created by the material, leaving the viewer to interpret the images themselves, according to his artist statement. Bradley said he approaches art from the formal elements, such as line, shape, space, value, color, and texture, instead of from a social or political angle. "These principles are a language for art," he said. In his work, Bradley is always finding new ways to ask questions, and finds that consistency in investigation drives one work to another. He works to achieve a collage aspect in his work; however, he finds that simple is usually best. "I'm always taking things out to find the simplest answer instead of just adding and adding," he said. Jordan Moss, an art major on the Cochran campus, enjoyed the exhibit because the pieces were something she had never really seen before. "The pieces were really interesting because the materials were different," she said. Moss was also impressed with Bradley. "He’s very good at what he does," she said. "He presents himself well." "The exhibit presents an interesting new perspective on the world," said Agnew. "Bradley has a unique vision." Kip Bradley is also an adjunct professor in the Foundation Studies and Painting Departments at Savannah College of Art and Design and Armstrong State University, and has shown work in Savannah, Florida, and New York. "New Paintings" will be on display through Friday, March 25. The exhibit is free and open to the public. |
