Biography

Phillip A. Gibbs was born in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. He attended the public schools of Franklin County, Virginia and received his high school diploma in 1975. He later attended East Tennessee State University where he completed a Bachelor's degree in English and history in 1978. After teaching social studies in Franklin County High School Phillip returned to East Tennessee and earned a Master's degree in history in 1982. In 1988 he completed the Ph. D. in American history at Mississippi State University. Phillip arrived at Middle Georgia College in 1987 and currently teaches survey and special topics courses in U. S. History and World Civilization. His book reviews have appeared in the North Carolina Historical Review, the Mississippi Quarterly, and the Journal of Mississippi History. He has also published articles and essays in The Journal of American Culture, Teaching English in the Two Year College, the Encyclopedia of Civil Rights, and the Encyclopedia of Malcolm X. He has also authored with his colleague, Dr. Tracey Provost, a short history of Hawkinsville, Georgia. An avid traveler and student of world cultures, he has studied and taught in Brazil, Italy, Malaysia, Singapore, India, Mexico, Czech Republic, France, and Great Britain. Phillip currently coordinates the MGC Study- Abroad Program in London, England. Apart from his scholarly activities, Phillip enjoys tennis, running, dancing, cooking,and weight lifting with his wife Penny. He also plays several instruments, including bass guitar, drums, and Appalachian dulcimer. He is currently the bassist for the The Mid-Life Chryslers.
