ENGL1102 Biography Mary Ann Gareis has been known for many years to friends and family
alike as Mert. She was born and raised in northern Kentucky. After
recieving her BA degree from Berea College, she hung around Berea for a
few years working as handweaver at Churchill Weavers. Realizing that
the artistic lifestyle was not for her, in 1987 she ran away to Athens,
Georgia to study medieval literature. There she met her husband
Peter with whom she moved to Cochran in 1992. They live on thirteen
wooded acres just outside town with their three children, (Grady, Nicholas, and Susan)one Husky, Mika who was rescued from the pound, Ezra the feline refugee from the Harvey's parking lot, two refugee ferrets (Simon and Mark), and innumerable fish.
