Admissions

How can I request for admissions information to be sent to me?
You may e-mail us at admissions@mgc.edu, go to www.mgc.edu click on Admissions and select Get the Kit, or call our office at 478-934-3103 and make a request by phone.

How can I apply for admission?
You may apply at www.mgc.edu by clicking on Admissions and selecting Apply Online or you may print out an application at www.mgc.edu/forms and mail it in.

Can I apply on-line?
Yes. Your application is processed much faster if you apply online.  You can do so at  www.mgc.edu by clicking on Admissions and selecting Apply Online

How much is the application fee?
The online application fee is $20.  The paper application fee is $30.  Both are non-refundable.

What information do I need to turn in to go through the admissions process?
First, apply to MGC online at www.mgc.edu and paying the $20 online application fee, or print out the application & send it in with the $30.00 paper application fee.  Next, have your official high school transcripts and all college or technical school transcripts sent to us.  For students starting Spring semester 2012, official SAT scores of 430 Critical Reading and 400 math, official ACT scores of 17 English and 17 math OR official COMPASS exam scores of  62 Reading, 32 English, 20 Algebra must be received before a decision can be made.

When is your application deadline?
You need to send the application, transcripts, test scores, and immunization form into us at least thirty days (30) before the first day of registration for the semester in which you intend to enroll. The sooner you mail in your information to us, the sooner we will be able to make an admissions decision.

Do I need a high school transcript and can I fax one?
If you are a brand new freshman or are not transferring in more than 30 semester hours, an official high school transcript is required.  A faxed transcript is not official.  A transcript must come directly from the high school or may be submitted by you in a sealed envelope from the high school.

What grade point average is required for admission?
For traditional freshman, we require a minimum 2.0 GPA in core academic courses for College Prep students and a minimum 2.2 GPA in core academic courses for Tech Prep students.

Do you accept students who receive Tech Prep diplomas?
Yes. We do accept students with Tech Prep diplomas as long as they have a minimum 2.2 academic core GPA.

Why is the academic core grade point average the Admissions Office calculated different from the GPA on my high school transcript?
The academic core grade point average is calculated on a 4 point scale: 4 points for an A, 3 Points for a B, 2 Points for a C, 1 point for a D, and a 0 for an F.  We look at all attempts in your English, math, natural science, and social science courses for Tech/Career Prep students and all attempts in your English, math, natural science, social science, and foreign language courses for College Prep students

Do I have to take the SAT or ACT?
No. SAT or ACT scores are not required for admission. Test scores are still required for ACCEL or dual enrollment students, international students, home schooled students, and students from non-accredited high schools.  Starting Spring semester 2012, students without a 430 critical Reading and 400 math on the SAT or a 17 English and 17 math on the ACT, will be required to take the COMPASS exam and submit minimum scores of 62 Reading, 32 English, 20 Algebra.

Do you need college or technical school transcripts?
Yes. We need official transcripts from all colleges and technical schools you have attended.  Although you may not have transferable credits from an institution, we still require an official transcript to insure that you have left that institution in good standing.

Do you accept GED scores?
Yes. If you have passing GED scores and your high school graduating class has graduated, you are eligible for admission. You can call 1-800-94-MY-GED to have your official scores sent to MGC.

What do I need to submit if I want to come as a transient student for one semester and return to my home college?
We will need the application for admission, the immunization form and a transient permission form from your home college.

How do I provide proof of citizenship for Admissions?
Proof of citizenship or lawful presence in the US is verified through the FAFSA application or by providing following documentation to the Admissions Office: a Certified U.S. Birth Certificate showing the student was born in the U.S. or a U.S. territory, a U.S. Certificate of Naturalization (USCIS form N-550 or N-570), a U.S. Certificate of Citizenship (USCIS form N-560 or N-561), a U.S. Certificate of Birth Abroad issued by the Department of State (DS-1350) or a Consular Report of Birth Abroad (FS-240), a current U.S. Passport, Permanent Resident Card (USCUS form I-151 or I-551), a current Driver's License issued by the State of Georgia after January 1, 2008, a current ID issued by the State of Georgia after January 1, 2008, or a Military ID presented in person (service members only, not valid for dependents.) This documentation needs to be submitted prior to registration.

What if I can't provide proof of citizenship or lawful presence in the US?  Students who can't provide proof of citizenship or lawful presence in the US may still attend MGC, but will be charge out-of-state tuition.

When will I receive my acceptance letter?
Typically, a decision letter is sent out a week or two after the application and all transcripts and scores are received. Due to high volume after June 1, a decision letter may take longer.

How can I find out if I have been accepted?
Once all documents are received, an admissions decision can be made. You may check your Admissions Status online at www.mgc.edu by clicking on Admissions and selecting Application Status Check

Do I really need to turn in the immunization form?
Yes. All students attending classes on campus are required to submit our immunization form.  Students taking only online courses are exempt from this requirement.  Students are required to submit proof of 2 MMR shots, a Tetanus shot within the last 10 years, and the Varicella vaccination or a dated history of the chicken pox.  Students who will be 18 years old or younger at the time of enrollment must also submit the Hepatitis B series of vaccinations.  Print out the immunization form, have it signed by a health official, and return it to Admissions before registration.

Will you accept an immunization form from the Health Department?
Yes, as long as it has the information that is requested on the MGC immunization form.

Do you accept international students?
Yes. Please contact Sheila Brantley at 478-934-3351 sbrantley@mgc.edu  or Elisabeth Travis at 478-934-3136 ltravis@mgc.edu for admissions requirements or click on the Admission at www.mgc.edu and select International Student Admissions.

Why do I have to take the COMPASS exam?
Students who have not taken the SAT or ACT, have graduated with a Technical/Career Prep diploma, or have been out of high school for more than 5 years are some of the people who are required to take the COMPASS exam.  The COMPASS exam tests students in English, reading and math to insure that the student is ready for college level course work or to determine if the student needs some remedial help.

When should I take my COMPASS exam?
You need to take the COMPASS exam before Registration or before Orientation.  This is a placement exam so it must be taken before you register for your classes.  Starting Spring semester 2012, you need to take the COMPASS exam after you have applied to MGC.  You may schedule your exam at www.mgc.edu by clicking on Admissions and selecting COMPASS testing.

How much is the COMPASS exam?
There is no charge for the initial COMPASS exam.  There is a non-refundable $25 charge for any retest of COMPASS, the same cost whether it is one section or all three sections.  The $25 fee must be paid to the Business Office at the time the COMPASS retesting appointment is made.

How many times can I take the Compass?
The student may retest one time.  All sections of a COMPASS retest must be taken at one time.  A second retest may be granted by a written appeal to the Testing Coordinator. Decisions for a second retest will be made on a case-by case basis.  All retests must be completed a week prior to the start of the each semester.

Is the COMPASS timed?
No.  The test is un-timed so students may take as much time as they need to complete the test.

How do I sign up for the Compass?
Once you receive your acceptance letter, you may schedule your exam at www.mgc.edu by clicking on Admissions and selecting COMPASS testing.  The test is given on computer so an appointment must be made.
