RESIDENCE HALL COMPUTING

Wired & Wireless Access

Wired Access

MGC residence halls have network ports in each room to access the internet. Students must register their computer once during the year; this allows internet access as long as their computer continues to comply with policy requirements.

If you have more devices than available network ports in your room, you can use a wired or wireless switch to increase access and ports. If you use a wireless router, you will need to configure it for "Bridged" or "Access Point" mode.

Public Areas

In all public areas in residence halls, such as lobbies, lounges, conference rooms, and study halls, unsecured access to the MGC public wireless network (MGC-Wireless) is available.

This wireless network is available for users whose computer is 802.11b compliant; for requirements and configuration please go to: Routers and Access Points

Residence Hall Rooms

Within the residence halls, there are Wireless-N capable access points, so if you have an N-capable wireless card you will experience much faster speeds and all students should find a more reliable connection. The following locations currently have wireless connectivity throughout the residence hall:

Anderson Hall
Aviation Hall
Browning Hall
Gateway Hall
Harris Hall
Regents Hall
Talmadge Hall
Warrior Hall

Wired Versus Wireless

The wireless network is not meant to replace the wired network, rather it is provided as a convenience and provides overlay with the wired network. Network Operations recommends students use a wired connection when possible as it provides a faster, more reliable and secure connection than a wireless connection.

If you have a personal wireless router in your room, the implementation of the residential wireless networks may impact your ability to connect to your wireless router as there will be increased signal interference. We recommend that, unless necessary, you disable your personal wireless router and use the residential wireless networks.

If you are connected using your wired connection, you must disable your wireless card to avoid conflicts.

Acceptable Use Policy

Please be aware that by using the MGC Residential Network you are agreeing to the MGC Student Computer Use Policy .
