 COMMUNITY HEALTH FAIR HELD AT MGC COCHRAN CAMPUS (Cochran, GA) – MGC students recently enjoyed access to valuable health information at the Community Health Fair held recently in Alderman Hall on the Cochran campus. The fair, which was sponsored by the Science Club and the Nursing Department as a service to students and other members of the MGC community, had a variety of tables offering different tests.
Paula Bryant, the assistant director of the nursing program at MGC, said that the fair offered an assessment of students’ overall health. "Students come in, and we test blood pressure, pulmonary functioning, do nutritional analysis and screening, and also test for stress and ADHD," said Bryant. Science Club volunteers, Nursing students, Dr. Harrison, a Cochran physician, and several nurses from the Bleckley County Health Department ran the tables. Tosha Taylor, a student in the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program, said her experience at the fair went well. "I had my blood glucose level tested, a pulmonary test, and I did a grip test to determine my strength," said Taylor. "I got a lot of useful information on nutrition and reasons why it’s important to eat well." Maureen Stoy, a registered dietician and wife of MGC President Michael Stoy, provided dietary and nutritional information.Students came away from the fair with basic information about their health and how it can be improved. They also learned about available resources, such as the Health Department, physicians, and campus counselors they can reach out to if they have any health concerns, said Bryant. |
