 MGC STUDENT ART LEAGUE PLANS “WILL WORK FOR EMPTY WALLETS” COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT (Cochran, GA) – The Middle Georgia College Student Art League is launching a community service project to raise awareness of the number of unemployed citizens in the United States. The Student Art League is planning to create a life-size sculpture out of used, empty wallets, and is inviting businesses, churches, schools, and community groups to sponsor events to collect empty wallets to be donated to this project. At the request of any interested group, the Student Art League will donate a box or a display to help promote the collection of wallets. Assistant Advisor to the Student Art League Ms. Heather Hutton started the Empty Wallets project because of her past personal experience with unemployment. The empty wallets serve as a reminder to “pay it forward” and help out the unemployed. Ms. Hutton is willing to visit any group and share the story that inspired this project, as well as demonstrate how to make a wallet out of duct tape or recycled materials. The Student Art League has been making duct tape wallets as a promotional gift to people in exchange for donating a real wallet. The Student Art League is also offering a cash award of $150 to anyone who collects and donates 1,000 or more wallets. The goal is to collect 3,000 wallets. The exhibit is expected to be completed and on display beginning in November 2012 at the Peacock Gallery on the MGC Cochran Campus. All contributors will be named on the exhibit and invited to the opening. Special guests will be invited to perform poetry and music at the opening.
